Aloha,

just my .02. My mil who is Vietnamese told me that Vietnamese women don't
usually give colostrum. She did give her 8 children colustrum. In Vietnam,
the baby would be nursed by a mom with mature milk until the biological mom's
"milk came in." They also usually weaned around 1 year or shortly after
because they felt the milk was bad.

By the time I nursed my third, she stopped asking me when I was going to
wean. She even thought my daughter was still nursing long after weaning. I
guess she got used to the "extended" nursing and maybe even realized the milk
wasn't bad after all.

I think when people come to this country they want to take on American
ideals. I see this a lot, and unfortunately, formula feeding is considered
one of those ideals. I believe some think that because it is "scientific" it
must be better.

My mil used to tell me I should feed formula because it was easier. This is
what her daughters did, and I guess it was easier for them because my mil
took care of the grandchildren. However, my second was a sumo. People
always made comments. My mil would proudly tell them it was "mom's milk."

We now sit and talk sometimes about nursing, and the things children do while
at the breast. i think it has brought back happy memories for her.

Just my thoughts.

Aloha,
