Some kids with bad burns simply can not ingest the # of calories needed.
Then they are ng tube fed. Teens are always sure they can do it and are given
some time to try, but usually end up on continuous ng feedings to simply get
in the # of calories they need. Burn units have a formula for
figuring this out based on the area burned. Because a baby has a small body
surface their needs are usually even higher. I would pump, spin the milk to
get high cal. measure with cream-mat-o-crit and then add fortifier. If baby
is able to nurse, let him nurse for comfort and tube feed him whatever else
he needs. I'm sure a small baby will nurse for comfort, even if being tube
fed high cal breast milk.

Pat,
Thanks for writing. I think the reason this babe is not being tube fed is
the surface area of the burns is actually very small, it's just that they are
in very physically and emotionally critical areas. So his calorie increase
needs are lower than a baby with full thickness burns, and/or burns over more
surface area. They must feel that what they are doing is enough with their
calculations, without the tube right now. I am glad he is in a really good burn
center.

Peace,
Judy
