Anne,
I define a disorganized suck as one in which the baby's tongue does not
properly stroke the breast tissue. Upon digital exam, it feels like the
tongue is sort of "sucking backwards". (I hope that makes sense). But it
does sound like this baby could benefit from some suck training. Fingernail
down, touch the palate gently to elicit a suck. Then apply pressure
downward to the tongue and gently but firmly draw the finger out of the
mouth, maintaining pressure in such a way that the tongue is drawn forward
over the gums. Repeat this exercise several times until baby begins to
suck with an organized rhythm. Then put baby to breast. However, mother
will probably need to do the exercise prior to every nursing for several
days. I hope this helps, and I'll be very interested to see other comments
on this!
Warmly,
