Hi, All: I agree with you completely, Karen. The key to successful, long-
term brstfdg relies on 3 key elements - Motivation, Patience, and
Persistence in the mother. If she possesses all 3 in large quantities, she
will succeed (with or without the LC and HCPs). In thinking back over my
25 year career in infant feeding, I realized that I have encountered only
one infant we were never able to get to the breast. After 9 frustrating
months on the mother's part (and mine) he was finally diagnosed with a
fatal very rare neurological syndrome (wish I could remember what it
was!). Mom was actually relieved because since day 1 she kept trying to
tell her pediatrician something was wrong with her baby and he kept
insisting otherwise. I did lose contact with her shortly thereafter, but
it was frustrating for this mother to feed this baby by any method.
All other moms I have worked with over the years have been usually able to
find their own comfort level with brstfdg and subsequently able to report
positive experiences.
Time to stop typing, as it's pretty awkward with a splinted finger, jammed
(and broken) as I tried to stop the cat from running out the door at 10
PM. I wanted to go to bed, the cat wanted to party outside. Sigh...
