For those out there who are frustrated I wanted to share this bit of
conversation I had with a mommy the other day. I first saw her in the hospital
when she had baby #2. Breastfeeding "didn't work out very well" with her first
child, and she weaned to formula at 4 weeks. Because of the encouragment
she got at WIC and the information she got at breastfeeding class, she
decided to "try again" with baby #2. Baby is 4 1/2 months and thriving on
mom's milk. Mom has fallen in love with breastfeeding and plans to nurse
for "at least a year'. She has ovecome resistance from her husband, who
expressed jealousy at first over the breastfeeding relationship until he heard
about how much smarter breastfed babies are; and her mother-in-law, who
wanted to keep giving an extra bottle of formula just in case, and now sees
how much happier and more 'satisfied' the baby is after she gives a breastmilk
bottle. Mom is working full-time as a waitress in a popular chain restaurant
and countered resistance from her manager to her pumping breaks by telling
him that "this is the way it is, deal with it.". This manager has recently
informed her that his wife is expecting her second, and they are breastfeeding
because it is so important! I was so inspired and uplifted by talking with this
mom. It is so cool to hear a mom, in her own words, describing the cute things
her baby does at breast, and how she is amazed at the bonding taking place.
When I get frustrated hearing about the bad advice and ignorant
recommendations that some moms are given--I try to remember this saying
(gotten at a conference in State College, PA this spring, but I don't have
attribution, sorry)-- when you wonder if you are making a difference,
remember it only takes one baby to affect one mother to affect one family to
affect one community to affect one country which can affect the whole
world.
