Dear Lactnet Friends:

Laurie reports: "This was a regular user of marijuana, and we counseled her
about using, and based on info from the Infant Risk Center it was advised
that she pump and dump 5 half-lives from the last time she used, which was
12.5 days, so the doc told her 2 wks."

I am curious as to how the recommendations to pump and dump for 2 weeks
grew out of what the Infant Risk center said, because I contacted the Infant
Risk Center with similar question. I got a response from Colleen Peace, who
works with and spoke to Dr. Hale
at the Infant Risk Center.

Basically the problem is that while marijuana is illegal; it doesn't seem to
pose any health risks for infants who receive it via their mothers'
milk. "Levels in milk are low enough that clinical effects on infants appear
unlikely." Dr. Hale also said that if she smokes, she might NOT
test positive, but the baby's urine will. Bigger danger is if mom is high and
can't take care of her baby.

On another site, I found a concern about the baby being exposed to second
hand smoke, which raises a question about SIDS risk.

Marijuana is a pain!!

warmly,
