Jessica, you asked for information to share with mothers on issues of
weight gain and milk supply.

The LLLI website has easily-searched information aimed at
non-professionals on all sorts of common concerns ---
The Frequently Asked Questions offers links on weight charts and on
increasing supply:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/FAQMain.html

and, from the members' magazine, New Beginnings, some collected articles
on issues of weight gain/supply:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBweightchild.html
http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBmilksupplyissues.html

Other useful resource to share are articles by Dr. Jack Newman and by
Diane Weissinger, which offer some strategies for common breastfeeding
issues:

http://www.wiessinger.baka.com/bfing/index.html

Your first impulse may be to reassure these mothers (since so many
mothers are needlessly panicked about supply) but some of them may be in
real trouble, and in need of more hands-on help and supportive medical
oversight than you can provide by e-mail. Encouraging them to get
in-person help and useful feedback from knowledgeable sources may be the
best service you can provide.

For your own study toward your new profession, you'll find many useful
articles in:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleaderweb/LV/index.html

a database of articles from Leaven, the LLLI Leaders' magazine, which
deals with many of the common questions you're fielding in the "Solving
Specific Breastfeeding Articles/Research Articles" link. The "Helping
Mothers" link offers background on counseling skills.

Other useful resource to share are articles by Dr. Jack Newman and by
Diane Weissinger, which offer some strategies for common breastfeeding
issues:

http://www.wiessinger.baka.com/bfing/index.html

Good luck in your work.

Margaret Wills, LLLL, IBCLC
