Hello Shannon,

I work with an Early Intervention team of physical, occupational and speech
therapists in one of my jobs. I am the special instructor / lactation
consultant and as such I evaluate feeding whether the baby is breast or
bottle fed. Torticollis is something we see frequently. The professionals I
work with do the assessment and plans for this type of body work for
infants. It involves activities that can be adjusted that are just part of
the daily infant care as well as exercises and stretches. I suggest you
write a report to the pediatrician. Review a copy with the mother, and say
that you recommend the parents discuss with their pediatrician a referral to
early intervention or a physical therapist in their area for the symptoms
you are seeing. It is not in our scope of practice to diagnose the
condition. You can say something like the baby is not able to turn his head
to the side or there is asymmetry, etc. The earlier the torticollis is
managed the easier it is to remedy.

For feedings it is important to allow the baby to eat in his or her
preferred positions that are not uncomfortable so you don't exacerbate a
feeding problem. The adjustments are made to other routine activities.
