Another area of the world where wet nursing is not uncommon is the suburban
Chicago, IL, USA area, but it is buried deeply underground. Some of us LCs
are let in on the "secret" that moms would "never tell their doctors about".
I want to share a really heartwarming story (have mom's permission). I
went up to our med-surg unit on Mon. to see a nursing mom who came in on
Sun thru the ER and had an emergency appendectomy done Sun. night. She is
exclusively nursing her 5 month old. She nursed her other 2 babies 18-24
months. Of course she was told to pump&dump, but fortunately had some
previously pumped milk at home that her family was able to give the baby.
After I helped her get her situation straightened out so that she could
send her milk home as well as have a family member bring in the baby for
feedings, she told me that she has been pumping milk every day to donate to
an area mother who has an adopted baby. Shortly after birth, the adopted
baby's ped told the mom that her baby could die because the baby was not
tolerating any commercial formula. So, this mom and 6 other area mothers
have banded together to provide milk for this baby. Some of the moms take
turns nursing the baby for a day. The ped is fully aware of what's going
on and supports what they are doing because he readily admits the baby
could die without "mom's milk". The baby is now 2 months old and is
healthy and growing well. This story truly made my week!
