Lucy,

Three of my children were born at home, two attended by lay midwives. We
visited the midwife for my 1992 baby in 2008, and she was kind of
apologetic, telling me that the evolution of the profession since my son was
born indicates that she did too many "interventions" with me (which was not
my perception at the time). Apparently, the current approach of the
profession is more and more, "Don't just DO something -- stand there!".
Which reminds me of the "laid-back breastfeeding" now endorsed by many on
LACTNET and by La Leche League in the new 8th edition of *The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding*
http://www.llli.org/docs/0000000000000001WAB/WAB_Tear_sheet_Toolkit/01_laid_back_breastfeeding.pdf
.
So I would say that they are likely to appreciate discussion of how much
the recent emphasis in lactation is on the basic competence of the well,
full-term baby (which would be almost all of the ones they deal with in
their practice).

Subject: inservice for lay midwives

I will be doing a lactation update in a conference coming up for lay
midwives, who are certified to do home births in Arkansas. I have been told
that there is no need to cover basics but they would like an update on
recent information and research. What topics would you cover and what
sources do you recommend for this? I always have a hard time narrowing it
down and try to do too much. So I thought it would be useful to hear other
people's thoughts on what important topics to cover. Thanks.
