My one experience with an Avent nipple shield found a mother with the tips
of her nipples eroded away bilaterally. After much positional and latching
work, we finally discovered the cause--the inside of the shield, at the very
tip, had a raised X that wore into the nipple tissue when the nipple was drawn
down into the shield. We immediately changed brands (and eventually got the
baby off the shield altogether).

Good morning ladies,

A well meaning, misinformed grandmother brough a store bought Avent nipple
shield along to a consult . SIGH! Have any of you seen these? They are very
small, it looks to be about the size of the pacifier that has flanged edges
side to side and only is about an 1 to 1 and 1/4 inch wide. I would be very
afraid of aspiration, as they are silicone soft and too smal IMHO. Thinking
I should get in touch with the consumer product safety commission, but am
unsure if they check into "potential hazards" or just those items that have
caused real problems. Anyone know?

Yet another product to supposedly "help" and yet can cause great potential
for harm in a breastfeeding relationship, marketed to a largely
unsuspecting public.
