The discussion about the secondary nipple made me think of a mom/baby dyad I
had last year. Mom had neurofibromatomas in many spots - including two on
her right areola. Looked like three nipples right in a row! They were even
"bullseye brown" like the rest of the areolar tissue but clearly not
nipples.

We were (thank God) able to get the baby to take the whole kit and caboodle
in his mouth for a latch. I figured if we could get him to milk those
lactiferous sinuses (oops - well you know what I mean) we'd have a success.
And that's what happened! Wish I'd taken a picture - I may ask her so I can
send a cc to Barb Wilson-Clay! One of the nurses remarked she'd be all set
for non-nutritive suckling times........

I too have had a mom with big meaty nipples who pumped for her
petite-mouthed baby and baby happily switched to breast at six weeks. Mom
went on to nurse for > 18 months. You just never know!

By the way - I also had a mom who pumped for her cleft palate daughter for
nine months....After about 4 months she started pumping twice a day and
would get +/- 16 oz at each pumping for a total of 32 oz a day for her
little one! Halifax never had an ear infection in all that time. Her mom
would've kept going but ran into bigtime life difficulties.
