I recently saw a mom with severe damage that healed quickly as well.  She was
sobbing while nursing the baby, wanting dad to go out to purchase bottles and
formula and was certain that this was much more painful than her natural
birth.  When latch was corrected (opening baby's mouth by pressing on chin
with her finger), position changed frequently (nurse as long as mom could
tolerate, remove baby, apply lansinoh, move baby to different
position/different side), and lansinoh was applied *every* time baby came
off, mom's nipples healed completely in about 10 hours.

It was unreal....the speed with which they healed once mom got really
vigilant about the above three things.  No pumping or alternative feeding
methods were needed.
