In response to Barbara's post yesterday:

I have been an LC only since 95. I am grateful to all the pioneers
in the field who have blazed the trail for me! I'm not sold on cup
feeding. I've seen babies get hooked on it and passively open their
mouths and wait for the milk to be dropped in; then go to breast and
passively wait for the milk to come. Each case is individual, but finger
feeding or even bottle feeding at least teach sucking.
It seems some LCs see the bottle as the enemy but I do not. Of
course I like to see babies learn to breastfeed before bottles are
given!!
Most parents (not all) I have met are more comfortable using bottles for
supplementing than other methods.
Lately I've been rigging up a 'syringe sns' with a 10 or 20 or 30 cc
syringe with an 8 french fdg. tube or a 25 gauge butterfly IV tube sans
needle.
Learned this from a Special Care Nursery nurse, of course told her thank
you and gave her credit. It works well for a temporary sns and to try it
at the breast to see if some extra milk or D5W will increase baby's
interest.
