Actually, SOME college teachers DO get instruction in teaching. When I was
in grad school at University of Minnesota, I could be a Teaching Assistant
without instruction, as mostly I worked behind the scenes--writing test
questions, etc.

However, When I became a Teaching ASSCOIATE (meaning I could actually teach
a class), I had to be evaluated on six such sessions by experienced
instructos in the same field and I was required to know something about
teaching theories for adults. I realize this may have been innovative at
the time (20 years ago), and it probably is still the minority experience,
but I really appreciated it and would like to think that the students
benefited from even this minimal instruction before being loosed on them.

Def. of LC service: "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities
brilliantly disguised as impossible situations."
