Mary and all,
This has been a sore subject for me for a very long time. When I began
breastfeeding 22 years ago, the choices were limited to the "bicycle horn" and
some contraption which used baby food jars.
Needless to say, I became passably efficient in hand expression. Then came the
K-----son cylinder, somewhat of an improvement..then the swing back toward
breastfeeding and everybody including ABM companies had to get in on the act. I
have long questioned their motives in making breastpumps and their lack of
incentive to make a good one. As a student in Women's Studies, I also question
the presence of gender issues. I hope this question is not too crude, but if
such devices were on the market to be used on men's private parts and did so
much damage, would they be there after tomorrow? Who regulates the manufacture
and sale of such devices? Consumer Reports was mentioned. Have they ever done
a comparison of the breastpumps on the market, (or would they think that topic
unsuitable? What about the Consumer Product Safety Commission? Maybe we LC's
need to get some answers. It's fine to suggest to the patient that she may want
to return the product, and I've done so many times, but why is the product
allowed to be sold in the first place?
Please e-mail me if you would like to join me in this quest.

advertising, including the phrase "most like mother", another subject
altogether.)
