Thanks so much for updating us, Kim Ann!  I know I am not alone in my gratitude
for your continued participation on LN.  In light of the recent discussion about
the media attention to milk sharing your post was very apropos.  Your situation
is not one that many of us are likely to run across in our practice, which is
one reason why the listmothers welcome you to post to the list about it.
Another reason is that you are a cherished part of this community and it is just
GOOD to see you are keeping your feisty spirit through the rotten deal of your
cancer.

I'll be thinking of your words every time I work with a mother who weans for a
reason not of her own choosing.  Thanks again for sharing this with us.

One pathway is through The Center for Breastfeeding. www.healthychildren.cc
I think there may also be a similar offering in California.  Anyone aware?
This is not a commercial and I have no financial interest :-)

I wrote Karyn -Grace privately and told her that NP is probably not a good
idea.  I spent so much time taking care of sick kids and routine visits that
I had to get BF help for moms with problems via LLL, WIC and private LCs.  I
came to really understand where ped drs were coming from after I started
work FT as a NP :-(  There just isn't enough time in the day to deal with
complex BF situations.  I feel I do my bit by providing LLL #s, keeping
formula hidden in the closet and cheering moms on, complementing them on the
good job they are doing.

Subject: Re: Vit D levels

Again, not a commercial :-)  But Dr Carol Wagner has a new book out called
New Insights into Vitamin D During Pregnancy and Lactation. ( available from
Hale Publishing.)  It is very well referenced and makes a very interesting
read.  She says prior to 2004 "normal" of 25(OH)D was 15-80 ng/mL (37.5-200
nmol/L.
Since then the lower level has been revised to 25 ng/mL (62.5 nmol/L)  She
also says that they have not found toxicity in levels up to 100ng/mL.  Big
discussion on whether or not you live in a sun-rich envirnoment or not too.
(Winter in Norway-Not :-)

I had mine checked about a year and half ago after hearing Dr Wagner speak.
Mine was 7 :-(  I took 50,000 units weekly for 8 weeks.  Have done this
series 3 times in 1 1/2 years, plus 2000 units daily and I'm all the way up
to 27. I don't get much sun :-(  I'm not sure if I could handle cod liver
oil tho :-(

Vitamin D deficiency is also being connected to all sorts of other problems.
It's the newest cure-all, but I do think we need to at least have normal
levels and read research carefully.  Pat in SNJ (gray, cloudy and cold
today)

Subject: Dental Caries/Elimination diet

Laura, Although I am biased because most of my Friends are Naturopath MD's or
Oriental Medicine Doctor's, Bone and Teeth strength, from an Oriental or
Holistic perspective generally has to do with depletion. The problem with
Elimination diets is sometimes the patient's curtail their diet to such an
extent they no longer eat a wide variety of foods and thus get less nutrients.
Having said that, I just read an interseting article by Dr Klinghart, a well
respected ND,  citing research out of Japan on Pregnant Mom's that took
Chlorella growth factor during pregnancy and Lactation and they followed up the
Children for 3 or 4 ? years, I have not had time to read the actual study yet,
and the children had no Caries. Also while calcium is important, bone and teeth
also need Magnesium , trace minerals and silica to be strong, most americans are
deficient in all of these things, and Pregnancy and Nursing does drain the
Mother if she is not adequatley replenishing  herself. People with highest
calcium intake, the Swedish, have the highest Osteoporosis rates, and Japanese
with the lowest Calcium intake, of course they do eat their greens though, and
greens are high in Mag/Trace Minerals and Silica,  have the strongest bones,

Subject: Milk Supply/expression/ Jean's RPS technique

Jean, Thank You so much for all you do, I really believe your technique is
worthwhile and I use it often now. I had been out of Lactation for the Past 8
years, Midwifery school, than a Job in the OBGYN clinic at Kaiser, and this
October took a job at a Large Military Hospital, Post Partum Lactation, and
unfortunately, things have not changed. Still the same issues I was dealing with
years ago,  mother infant separation, get them discharged within 24  hours,
etc.  I am noticing the same variation in terms of ability of some Mother's to
express colostrum and some no matter how much I try to help her Manually express
not one drop comes out.  I had a patient the other day that on day 2 was able to
obtain 1 ounce colostrum with the Harmony hand pump, after I showed her how to
apply RPS,  and she was a C/section, although planned, so not as much IVFluid
given as laboring then C/sec, and yet another patient the same week, on day 2
with not one drop coming out,  via manual or electric expression, that patient
was a longer labor, vag delivery.  The point I wanted to make is that I def. see
in my  practice that most Women obtain more colostrum with massage/RPS and hand
expression than a Mechanical pump. Sometimes I am reluctant to put the pump into
the equation too soon, because they are seeing the drops with Manual expression,
then I have them use the electric pump and nothing comes out, or 1 or 2 drops
after 10 minutes of pumping, versus many drops flowing out with RPS ands manual
expression, then they say to me, " I don't think I have enough", no matter that
I tell them the pump is not the best reflection of what is in the Breast, I do
not think they believe that.  Lisa Mooney CNM MSN IBCLC
