"Do you think using a nipple shield in her case would be adviseable. We
haven't tried that and with the babys aversion to the breast, maybe it would
be
more like the bottle to her with the shield, and then she can slowly wean
the
baby from the shield."

Cindy, Absolutely have this mom try BF with a nipple shield. I have found
them to be very effective in just this kind of situation. Make sure she
gets the very flexible shield (Medela, Ameda, or Avent). Make sure the baby
latches deeply, with the whole dome in her mouth and her mouth right up
against the breast. You should not be able to see the dome while she is
nursing. The baby's lips should be against the breast.

Have the mom use the shield for every feeding until BF is effortless for
both her and the baby. It may be several days to a week. Then have her
latch the baby on with the shield, BF for 3-5 minutes until the milk starts
to flow, the baby is sucking and swallowing, and there is a smooth pattern
going. Then mom should slip the baby off the breast, remove the shield, and
try to latch her without the shield. It may take 3 or 4 attempts to latch,
just don't let it become a battle.

The baby may need the shield at some feedings and not at others during the
weaning process. Some babies attach to the breast and then take all
feedings that way from then on. Some need the shield on one breast but not
the other. Some need a more gradual weaning process from the shield.

Good luck.
