You might point out to the mother that this PEDIATRICIAN did NOT help develop
this plan. It was developed totally and solely by a man with no background in
lactation, pediatrics, child development, medicine, nutrition -- blah blah.
It is preparation for parenting (the religious version) with the Bible
references stripped out. It is word for word "Prep" -- and all Bucknam did
was put his name on it for marketing purposes and to make it "legit." He's
probably made a bundle of money on it, but he did not write one word of it.
The stuff has been around (gag) since 1984 in one form or another...Bucknam
wasn't even out of his residency then. And just because a pediatrician agrees
with the principles doesn't mean they have diddly to back them up
scientifically.

He's having to backpedal now because of the ruckus that has been made over how
dreadful the program is, and there have been some changes in the newest
edition of BW which came out in 1998 (which I still haven't seen in any
stores, BTW), but it still doesn't line up with AAP or other lactation
guidelines.

Jan -- in Wheaton.
