I think you have to look at it from the other side--that is that breast milk is what a growing human brain is supposed to get.  So that how the brain functions when it has been fed mother's milk is not really the optimal, but the baseline.  Babies who are fed artificial milk are developing below what is the norm. It is only in our society where formula feedding is so wide spread that a child's development while being formula fed is considered "normal"
