We started using the asymmetical latch about a year ago at our facility. It
has made a world of difference. Now all our nurses are taught this latch and
have to be competencied on it. Moms say "Oh,this feels so much better!". We
obtained Dr. Jane Morton's video "Breastfeeding: Getting Started". She is on
staff at Stanford University in Palo Alto and runs their Breastfeeding
Clinic. The video is on all the patient's TV's in their rooms to watch at
their leisure. We don't see nearly as many compression stripes as we used
to. Line up baby nose to nipple, not mouth to nipple. Should see lots of
areola above baby's upper lip when latch is obtained and very little, if any,
areola under baby's lower lip. Tongue does not chaf the nipple with every
suck. Instead, it milks the sinuses. Mom feels no pain. Loni Denman, RN,
IBCLC
