I am seeking advice/recommendations/policy/protocols from those on the list
who work in NICU's. How long without ramifications, can one give hind milk
to a preterm infant with a birthweight of less than 1500 grams &/or
gestational age of 32 weeks or less. Is there any published research on
the long-term effects of hind milk feedings for these premies?
My NICU is staffed by 5 neonatologists and 2 neonatal nurse practioners.
They are in the process of trying to reach consensus on the use of
breastmilk and supplement formula's or HMF in light of recent FDA reports
r/t risks of using powdered formula. The NICU dietician and I are working
toward promoting more use of hindmilk to increase calories. Our concern is
the increased use of ready to feed formula over breastmilk.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
