I agree with Cathy Genna that the mother should be informed. You do have the
information to share with her. Cathy gave a great way to approach it. The
bottom line is when the "criteria" for how breastfeeding should be going on
day 5 (or sooner) is not met, then action needs to be taken. The first
action is "feed the baby," as you know. Mom can choose how to supplement,
but I agree a supplementer at breast is a good option. She can go from there
as far as strategies to increase her milk production. And I agree with one
poster, that I see this situation fairly often. Often the mother reports she
has polycystic ovaries.
