Nipple ad hits a sensitive spot

Sunday January 27 2008

A recent press ad, for the Boots Expert moisturising nipple cream, has
escaped sanction from advertising watchdogs here in and in the UK, after
angry women groups said it would discourage mothers from breastfeeding.

The ad, which featured a sketch of a mother grimacing as she holds her
feeding baby at arm's length, her breast stretched taut, ran in several
leading women's magazines such as OK and Mother and Baby.

Organisations such as the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and the
National Childbirth Trust in England led the complaints but they were
rejected. Complainants said the ads were misleading because they implied
that sore nipples were normal when breastfeeding, whereas in fact it was
usually due to incorrect feeding techniques.

Boots, which has stores in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway,
said the ads were designed to look at a problem commonly experienced by
mothers in a "light-hearted and humorous way".

(that's the whole article)

Here's a link to the Boots "Breastfeeding" products - including an
"Antiseptic Nipple Spray"!!! (who knew?)
