Cathy, Thanks for backing me up on the Classic pump. You are absolutely
correct, many people think that the Classic and Lactina are interchangeable,
and that is a shame--as we'll never know if a mother's milk supply could have
been greater if using the best pump for that purpose. It would be
interesting to follow this, somehow, without doing potential damage to
mothers. We used to have Hollister at our Hospital, but noticed a lot of
nipple damage with SMBs. The kits used now were not really designed to go
with the SMB and the pressures we found, by using a pressure gauge, were
outrageous on most pumps. With the Elite, pressures were too low on most
pumps, especially with double pumping. We had quite a few mothers who had
lousy milk supplies, needed Reglan, changed pumps and were much better. It's
too bad.
On to my next issue: Are you using creamatocrits at your hospital, or doing
hindmilk pumping without checking creamatocrits? I sent a letter to Lactnet
a few days ago and have gotten no responses, so I'm wondering if people are
doing them or not. Please let me know--and if you know of anyone
else--please ask them for me and have them send answers to me. It's the
second part of our project to get them started here--I've done the lit
review--be what it may--but now "the boys" want to know who else is doing
them. Thanks, Maureen Allen
