Re cultural sensitivity. Orthodox Muslims have similar rules of modesty to
orthodox (and many not-so-orthodox) Jewish women and in general would not
welcome being photographed while breastfeeding. In fact when I teach these
groups, I use illustrated sketch cards or line drawings rather than
photographs, slides or films to start discussion on the structure of the
breast and latching on. During my postnatal meetings, these Arab and Jewish
mothers are quite happy about breastfeeding while people are in the room,
but sit with their chairs turned round so that they are not exposed to
others.
Apropos fenugreek - this grows wild on the hillsides of Galilee and is used
extensively in cooking mostly in Arab kitchens. It is called hilba and is
quite bitter, but is thought to be very healthy. My local health store
makes up a tea mixture of hilba (fenugreek) and alfalfa specifically for
breastfeeding mothers to increase their supply.
I have never heard of any contraindications - or continue for extended
periods.
I think we have to be careful about recommending herbal remedies - it
doesn`t mean that because it`s natural it has no risk, so if anyone has
really reliable data about the use of fenugreek for this purpose, I would
like to hear about it.
