Greetings. I've just joined LACTNET and already have a question. Has
anyone worked with, heard, or read about obesity in a breastfed infant. This
infant is only three months old, was in the eight pound range at birth (I
haven't seen him myself) and now weighs 25 lbs. His Dr., a pediatric
endocinologist, has been urging the mother to wean for weeks and is now
getting more demanding. She wants the mother to feed watered-down breast
milk 3, 4 times a day and rice cereal. But she admits that she usually sees
IFFT babies - not ones with obesity. I checked Ruth Lawrence's book and
found the best info there on obesity and the creamotocrit.

I would like to know if any of you have had experience working with a mother
and infant like these. Additonally, the mother is overweight (I don't know
how much, I'm getting this info second hand) and two older sibs were 30, 31
pounds at one year of age. There may indeed be a hyperlipidemia problem.
Evidently, this baby has the look of an obese adult who can't get up out of
a chair - not just a normal plump look. He may even be somewhat short of
breath!

Any thoughts, suggestions welcome. Thanks.
