Yes, Pat, thanks!

Actually in both developed and developing countries, the infants of 
HIV+ mothers receive 4 - 6 weeks of ARV prophylaxis to "mop up" any 
virus transmitted to the baby AT BIRTH!!!   The option for treatment 
of the baby after this time is not really recommended any more, 
though it used to be, when treatment for the mother was withdrawn 
once she'd successfully incubated the baby.  I always thought this 
was immoral!

Now the recommendation is for treatment of the _mother_ from the time 
of diagnosis and which should be continued for life.  This means that 
the mother will live an almost normal life-span, and turns HIV from a 
lethal into a chronic disease.... ARVs have truly transformed the 
whole HIV scene.
