Re Helen's question about calendula and Jennifer's response: Someone recommended that I use calendula ointment on the perineum following birth, and my naturopathic doctor (very knowledgeable in homeopathics and herbs) advised against it.  She said that calendula is recommended for surface wounds only, because it may seal the skin over a deeper wound too quickly.  She instead recommended hypericum (St. John's Wort) oil, which I did use for minor tearing (on the perineum, not on nipples) and found it to work very nicely.

I seem to recall something on the bottle about "external use only", so not sure how appropriate it would be for nipples, although when I googled just now, I do see some sellers who recommend it for nipples, as well as some studies supporting its antibacterial and wound healing properties...
