Laura,

I had a pt. about a year ago who had a strong family history of breast cancer
and came up with bilateral multiple calcifications on her mammogram
immediately post weaning. If I remember correctly she nursed for more than a
year. She herself is an oncologist so was quite concerned when the
radiologist told her that the multiple calcifications could be consistent
with breast cancer. Nobody seemed to have a clue what a "normal" mammogram
immediately post weaning should look like since this is not an age group
normally having mammograms. I referred her to Dr. Ruth Lawrence who very
kindly reassured her that this was indeed a "normal" picture post weaning and
the mother was most grateful. I believe she sent her mammogram to Dr.
Lawrence. I don't remember that she had a group of calcifications that were
suspicious ...just diffuse multiple calcifications in each breast. I would
not know what advice to give your mother, but you could get in touch with
Ruth Lawrence. If she has already weaned, a needle biopsy should not be too
invasive. It is good to know that this picture of multiple calcifications is
normal immediately post weaning, however.
