Dear Group,

One of my students asked me to post this for her. She is having a great deal
of difficulty getting onto Lactnet -- not sure why.... If you respond, please
respond on list and directly to Cherie. Thanks so much!

Hello-
I am a college nutrition instructor and in-training with BSC for their
Lactation Consultant progam. The home birth midwilfe that I am working with
to get my hours and experience has a client
that had breast reduction surgery 3 years ago that caused much scar tissue
and
although her one week old baby seems to be getting enough milk and mom is
producing
plenty of milk, mom is in GREAT pain. It is her 4th baby and she had no pain
on her first 3 which were before the breast surgery. I feel like there could
be many reasons for her pain that may or may not be associated with the
breast augmentation. The mom had a large areola before the surgery and now
it is quite smaller, but her nipple is very large and the baby has a little
difficulty, but manages to take in enough breast for an effective latch. Her
pain is severe and is only felt during feeding and in the scar tissue area.
Has anyone out there had any expereince working with a similar situation? Is
it possible that the breast reduction in the areolar region caused any
lactiferous sinus to be in a non-areolar region now? I am wondering if this
is something specific to the surgery itself and independent to typical
engorgement/plugged duct/etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
