From time to time subscribers post on their own situations. I hope this can
clarify the difference between when this is within the guidelines and when
it is not.

The listmothers have approved such posts on an individual basis, for example
when the problem involved is so rare that it is important to have the case
reports in the archives for others to learn from. Some personal cases have
been posted on purely as information, not as part of a quest for more input.
In addition, in most of the cases that have been approved for posting to the
list, the posters have also been IBCLCs. That means they are members of the
very group we refer mothers to for expert help; if they are stumped, where
else can they go but to their colleagues? It is a bit different for someone
who is hoping to become an IBCLC; we recommend they first seek help from a
live person somewhere out there, and if that person is stumped as well, then
it's perfectly appropriate to use Lactnet to get more ideas for help.

Obviously we can't check on whether all the cases presented here about
clients are actually cases involving someone other than the poster
themselves; this medium is based on a staggering amount of trust in the
honesty of others. We appreciate the honesty of those of you who share your
personal stories, and we feel that you of course deserve the best possible
help, which often means not being your own clinician, but consulting someone
else.

Since there are numerous places expressly for mothers with breastfeeding
problems to get help on line, and since we feel very strongly that they
really deserve to get live, hands-on help, we don't want to open Lactnet up
for 'on-line treatment' by all the subscribers at once. We don't want to
risk anyone missing out on direct help because they used our list instead of
consulting someone locally. We want Lactnet to help the people who are
directly helping mothers, to be able to get more input from their
colleagues, so they can go back to the mothers and help them better. We
hope you all appreciate the difference in these goals.
