As Kathleen Bruce reminded the list, our focus is indeed breastfeeding, and
we respectfully (and in my case, reluctantly! :-)) ask that discussions of
issues peripheral to breastfeeding, though no less engaging or important, be
carried out elsewhere than on Lactnet.
(Insert sound of soapbox being dragged out once again and me climbing on it,
here)
I see our single-minded, monomaniac focus as the listmothers' own small
contribution to peace in the world: by staying on topic we form connections
to people with whom we have little else in common, and they become less
'other' and more 'us'. I'm sure many of us would be astounded to know more
about the political feelings of subscribers from whom we have learned
important things about esoteric breastfeeding problems, because we vary in
our placement on the political map, a lot.
For me it has been a powerful lesson in humility: that just because I have a
different opinion from a colleague on some other political issue, doesn't
mean that their knowledge about our common field is worthless, which is what
I used to think, actually.
Climbing down now, please carry on with discussions about breastfeeding.
