Peg, you say "I get the idea that Medela maybe phasing out the classic."
Absolutely, they are. They have officially stated that this is so. Although
they will still *sell* new Classic pumps, they are no longer putting any new
Classics into their rental program. So if you purchase pumps, such as a hospital
might do, you can still get a Classic if you want it. But if you rent your
pumps from Medela, like many rental depots do, if you want another Classic you
must wait for someone else to return a pump, and Medela to fix or refurbish it,
and then they ship it out again to the next depot on the waiting list. Even
if you send one of "your" rental Classics in for repair, you won't
automatically get it back. They will fix it and send it on to the next on the waiting
list. It can sometimes take weeks to get a Classic you've ordered as a rental.
And as older Classics become irrepairable (is that a word?), they just won't
be replaced. They have officially stated that to us in information they
mailed to rental depots. I am not real happy with this plan of theirs. I don't
feel the Symphony has been on the market long enough to truly test whether many,
many mothers will be able to maintain a milk supply long-term with the
Symphony if their baby is not breastfeeding well. To me, it hits very much like the
formula companies refusing to sell the older formulas without the DHA/ARA
additives, before the newer versions are truly well-tested long-term.
