I had read this earlier. I think it is well-written and expresses the deep
emotions of mothering well, but it still leaves me very puzzled.

What I don't understand is: why did this little girl have to be weaned? It
was clearly not her idea, because the mother describes several instances
where she cries, asking to be nursed. And it seems like a less-than-ideal
time, since there are apparently many other changes going on in this little
one's life. I cringe when I read her description of the little girl howling
and becoming angry, and wonder if it is related to all these changes
happening at the same time as she loses access to the breast.

I can't help but feel sad for this little girl, and I wish I understood the
reasoning behind this weaning better. I feel like I must be missing
something.
