Kathy said,

different pelvic shapes was amusing.>>

Glad I could bring merriment to your day, Kathy! ;-) I got this info, as I
said, from a nursing maternity book, including the description of anthropoid
as "ape-like" which I assumed meant this was a typical shape for apes. I
cannot vouch for the accuracy of the book, only that this was what I assumed
they meant. I believe the four types of pelvises are an accurate
description though I gather I didn't clarify that this was no indicator of
whether a mom could "safely" deliver a baby or not. The book did not make
this claim, only that the Gynecoid was the best/easiest shape to facilitate
this. Likewise, measurements are not an accurate predictor of success at a
vaginal birth, just an idea. Is it necessary to have this? Of course not.
I suppose I should have just kept my mouth shut (I thought about it and it
is off topic!<<sheepish grin>>) but I thought this info was interesting,
because I guess I had assumed we're all shaped the same when, of course,
we're not.
In the same vein, my comment about shoe size was meant as a laugh. Of
course I didn't believe it, nor did I see it born out anecdotally.
Nonetheless, I've heard many L & D nurses say this. Of course, I've also
seen them dangle a pencil on a string over a pregnant belly and predict the
sex of the baby based on the direction it would spin! Oh the stories you
hear! So my story telling is done. And I'm off to prepare for a workshop
with Molly Pessl tomorrow (which IS breastfeeding related), to which I am
soooo looking forward!

Marsha, in sunny Indiana where I hear the whine of race cars on my way home
from work every day. It must be May!
