Dear Pat,  I don't think it is fair to say RN's do and LC's teach and assess.  
Lets not tear each other up.  We are all on the same page to help moms and 
babies breastfeed.  When in the hospital, it does become necessary to Help  
moms with hands on.  Have you had a fresh c/s mom who cannot hold her 
baby to the breast because she is flat on her back and has several IV's in her 
hand.  I've had moms fresh out of the OR throwing up and begging me to hold 
her baby at the breast, which i did.  Please don't think its all or nothing.  I 
admit, I did have to take a step back in many respects, but I always have the 
moms demo back... Like i said in an earlier post, sometimes we are the only 
help they get.  I don't want to divide us into RN IBCLC and IBCLC.  We are all 
vitally important.  Most of what I have learned is from the non-RN IBCLC.  
However, their are times when I am glad I can delee a baby gagging on 
amniotic fluid without bugging the staff, and can do it very gently so baby 
goes right on to breast.  Otherwise, they would get ABM..
