An LC collegue of mine just shared with me that a mother she was working with
was told that the cord stump stays on breastfed babies longer than formula
fed babies. I searched the archives and could not find anything on this.
Has anyone else seen heard this and if so were does it come from? >>

In my own experience of 5 children all breastfed... the thing that seemed to
make the difference was whether or not I put alcohol on it. I used alcohol
for the first child's stump, as told to do by the hospital, and it took about
10 days or so to fall off. I also never got it wet with bath water either.
The last four were born at home and took a wonderful herbal bath (no soap)
with mom within hours of birth and everyday a warm soak herbal bath for the
first week. No alcohol on the stump, stump got wet in the herbal bath
everyday and they all fell off by the end of the first week.
