I am intrigued with the discussion on tooth decay in breastfed toddlers. I
guess I am amazed that people just don't go out and buy the appropriate
toothpaste for their toddlers...you know the one with lactoferrin in it..its
only $7.95 a tube. Why should we trust breastmilk to protect our children's
teeth? It's much better to buy a tube of toothpaste with lactoferrin in
it...Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC...who just can't stop being amused by the
extreme cleverness of the lactoferrin industry...no--I do not have any
connection to this company nor do I have any shares of stock in this
company...
I think we should think twice about falling for the belief that breastfeeding
has anything to do with tooth decay. If these guys can sell toothpaste based
on their belief that lactoferrin prevents gum disease, then I certainly feel
justified in my belief that breastfeeding has nothing to do with tooth decay
or gum disease.

"Brushing Up On a Natural Defense

Lactoferrin is not a household word, but you should know that it is a protein
that is a natural component of many body fluids such as tears, blood, milk
and saliva. Lactoferrin's anti-microbial properties provide an excellent
defense against invading microorganisms.

So what does all of this have to do with gum disease? Lactoferrin is
important in oral hygiene because it can prevent the adhesion and growth of
bacteria on your gums. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Research
suggests that toothpastes and other oral hygiene products be fortified with
proteins such as lactoferrin for superior oral health.

If prevention of gum disease is a concern for you then Immunotec Protein
Toothpaste will help to secure a healthier, brighter future for your teeth
and gums. Now that brings a smile to your face!
