Quick, someone find a suitable source of vit D that the baby can take which
is not tri-vi-sol which includes things the baby does not need and which
interfere with the absorption of other vit/minerals in the breastmilk.
Besides, the formula company which makes it, MJ will be delighted to have a
reason to suggest that brmilk is not complete nutrition. In truth the only
cases of vit D deficiency is those who stay indoors, and those who have dark
skin, or keep baby completely covered at all times.

NEW CLINICAL REPORT ON VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION

A new clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
entitled, "Prevention of Rickets and Vitamin D Deficiency: New Guidelines
for Vitamin D Intake," recommends that all healthy infants beginning during
the first two months of life, children and adolescents should receive
vitamin D supplementation to prevent rickets and vitamin D deficiency. The
recommendation includes breastfed infants. The report appears in the April
issue of Pediatrics.

According to the report, "It is recommended that all infants, including
those who are exclusively breastfed, have a minimum intake of 200
International Units (IU) of vitamin D per day beginning during the first 2
months of life. In addition, it is recommended that an intake of 200 IU of
vitamin D per day be continued throughout childhood and adolescence, because
adequate sunlight exposure is not easily determined for a given individual."
This report affirms guidelines from the National Academy of Sciences.

A copy of the report can be found on April 1, 2003 at
http://www.aappolicy.org A member Q&A regarding the report is posted on the
Members Only Channel and can be found under "What's New" and in the Media
Center http://www.aap.org/moc

infants need vitamin D supplement" at
