Remember the hideoously engorged moms Out of the three with the "worst
engorgement I've seen in years" two now have babies who are not gaining
weight. Both little ones were premature (35& 36 wks) Both moms came in in
preterm labor due to dehydration, both received massive amts of IV fluids and
both were sectioned under epidural annesth. No narcotics in labor.
Baby A: birth wt: 5#14 oz, 8/7 wt: 5# 13.5 oz, 8/14 5#14oz. Baby is suckling
and swallowing well at the breast. There is a bit of a latch-on problem at
first because mom's areola is still firm, but once the baby is on, she seems
to do well, except she tires in about 5 minutes-- When mom tries to wake her
after she falls asleep at the breast, baby becomes very disorganized and
latch on is almost impossible. Baby still has massive molding of the head.
Heart sounds good no murmers. Output of urine and stool is better than
average. Mom does not want to use supplementer but is willing to pump and
bottle feed the EMM (expressed mother's milk). For all intents and purposes I
can't figure this one out, except for the lack of weight gain everything
checks out fine. Any ideas?
Baby B is pretty much the same story but there is no molding of the head. Mom
has decided to wean, *rather than deal with all this.*
Who was it that said: if you don't get it the first time God keeps sending it
to you until you figure it out?
