Oh great collective wisdom,
I have a mom here in my hospital who is a primip, delivered by C/S. She
has a baby boy. For years she has been able to express greenish-gray fluid,
in small quantities from her breasts. At every annual physical exam she has
noted this to her doctors who say its from cysts in her breasts and they are
not worried. She can not feel the cysts on monthly manual exams or not. She
wants to breastfeed, but she wants assurance that this is green stuf is OK.
Her OB told her it was OK to breastfeed. This is D3 after delivery. We
tried yesterday to get the baby to latch on, no luck. She also noted that
since the hormones of pregnancy have made changes on her breasts that her
areolas are large and her once everted nipples are now wide, flat and don't
'perk' up at all. This is why the baby has trouble latching.
OK, since the baby has not latched, I decided to have her pump. In
double pumping, both breasts put out 2 oz, of greenish grey colored milk. I
looked in Lawrence's text. She does have a section on green milk, but it
has to do with diet. I double checked with the mother, she doesn't eat
large quantities of green vegetables. And again said this has been going on
for years. She is still concerned about this green milk. I have to say, it
makes me wonder, and the looks are not appetizing!
Anyone have an idea about this? I didn't ask about mammograms or CA or
any of that since she has kept up with checking this out for so many years,
I assume that that is negative from the exams she's had.
Any thoughts of reassurance or answers for this different from normal
finding would be helpful.
Thanks in advance. Betsy Wells-Gephart, RN, IBCLC
