Pat,
Aside from the doctor's testimony, you may want to check out the following
article, which can be accessed at Pediatrics Electronic Pages, and then
also get the references de Onis used to write the paper. It states very
clearly that the current growth reference is not suitable for fully
breastfed babies, especially from 3-4 months of age and up.

de Onis
1997 Time for a New Growth Reference. Pediatrics. Vol. 100, No. 5,
December.

Cites reasons a new growth reference based on local birthweights and infant
growth for each country needed worldwide. Also cites growth charts as
major cause for professionally recommended weaning. Current growth
reference based on bottle-fed Caucasion population of North America.

Also, take a special look at

WHO Working Group on Infant Growth.
An evaluation of infant growth: the use and interpretation of
anthropometry in infants. Bull World Health Organ. 1995;73:165–74

which is referenced in de Onis's article. I would even see if she herself
would be interested in making a statement. Her contact address is listed
at the end of the paper.

This is the absolutely most terrible thing I've ever heard of. Our prayers
are with this mother.

Nofia
