Thickening can help bolus handling, but so can using very cold milk, if
baby's condition warrants. Cold reportedly helps swallowing. Robin
Glass and Lynn Wolf recommend Thick-it for thickening breastmilk. This
may help if the baby requires a thicker feed in order to notice it and
swallow.
The g-tube is probably the kindest thing they can do for this little one
right now, it takes the pressure off oral feeding, and mom and dad can
focus on skills at the baby's pace.
I have had success with one neurologically impaired infant by using very
(glacially, one drop at a time) slow fingerfeeding with a periodontal
syringe to help her learn to swallow without bradycardia.
