Dear Carolyn and all,
Incidence of tongue tie is difficult to tabulate. There isn't a lot
of research on it. Hazelbaker says in her thesis it may be 10 to 15 out
of a thousand; a recently published study from Stanford, in an
oto-laryngology journal states 48 babies out of 1,000...(which seems
rather high). Clipping 27 babies in 2 months seems like a high number,
what is the client population?
Carmen Fernando's book, Tongue tie, From Confusion to Clarity is
pretty good, from the angle of speech pathologists. She states the
frenotomy done before age 3 will correct any sucking and speech problems
better than if postponed until after age 3. She has only a few
paragraphs on infants, but does state frenotomy improves breastfeeding in
most, if not all, cases.
I wonder if your pediatric surgeon has personal experience???? Or a
family member that was affected????
Thanks for sharing what is happening in your hospital, 3 FP docs and
myself are trying to set up a study at our inner-city hospital in St.
Paul, Minnesota.
