Hi Folks,

Thank you for your overwhelming response and excitement regarding the
Milk Exchange!

I have, just for the moment, taken it offline, and the reason is this
(and this is what I need your input about): I had hoped to get
the milkbanks involved - of course the ideal is that people link up,
and get screened through a bank (or their doctor), but using the Exchange
leaves the onus on the donor and donee to make sure the milk gets
properly screened.

I've talked to two of the milkbanks, and they both expressed horror at the
possibility that individuals could contact each other, as of course
they could then arrange for the donee to receive unscreened,
unpastuerized milk. They both saw "a lot of problems" with the idea
(of the Exchange), mostly stemming from the above concerns, and related
liability.

So I'd like to ask your opinions, and for your input. I hate to give up
on what seems a very viable, and useful, idea, but I want to be very
careful as well.

Do you have any suggestions as to how to make this even safer - as safe
as possible? How to ensure that there is no liability to the Exchange
(yeah, I know, I'm the lawyer - I do already have what I consider a
fairly tight disclaimer up, but...). Is pastuerization really
necessary? [I hadn't thought so before speaking to these banks.] Am I
naive to think that the appropriate screening can be done by your
doctor?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Anne
