Hi Jennifer and others,

Karen wrote what I was thinking about credential status after active
practice. In many health professions the degree is an MS or BS or AS,
whereas the licensing credential is the RD, RN, or in my case RDH which
requires CE's and a fee every two years to renew. In one of the states I
used to practice there was a way to put the license in an unpaid, no CE,
"on hold" for an RDH who was not practicing in that state. It has become
standard in the last 30 years or so for people who are practicing in
professions to maintain current with the knowledge base to be required to
take CE's.

On the other hand, certification for IBCLC's may be more similar to the
degree which other professionals acquire. Maybe someday the LC credential
will also be dual academic credential and registration or license. This
topic deserves a lot of thought.
