I have no experience at all with donor milk from milk banks. I have a child
in my practice who has severe reflux, recently underwent surgery for G-tube
and Nissen fundiplication who has been largely unable or unwilling to
tolerate any formula. Baby is 2 mos old and has developed an oral aversion,
I think from a combination of the reflux, many unpleasant oral experiences
in the hospital, and the taste of Nutramigen. She seems to like the taste
of some other formulas better, but has a lot of GI upset with them. For any
of you with experience, would this be the type of thing insurance might be
willing to cover human milk for? I have gently mentioned
relactation/inducing lactation to this mom a few times, but her surgeon,
dietician, GI doc have never even mentioned it (not even when baby was brand
new and in the NICU for 4 days throwing up every formula presented, insert
rolling eyes here.) These parents had a very difficult pregnancy and the
baby was diagnosed prenatally with what was thought to be a lethal
congenital anomaly, that turned out after birth to be no big deal, but they
went through a lot emotionally, and I don't feel I can push this mom more to
relactate without being able to guarantee some kind of results as she has
been through so much pain caused by docs spouting opinions as fact. I think
she'd be willing to give donor milk a try, though, if it might help get her
baby eating orally. Baby is currently receiving most of her feeds through
the G-tube, and fights every oral feed, and really seems to dislike the
taste of her offered diet. Can someone tell me how I would go about looking
into donor milk for this infant, or is this not an appropriate situation to
try it?
