Dear Lactnetters:

I'm working with a mom who has had recurrent plugged ducts in upper, inner
quadrant R breast throughout her breastfeeding career. Now breastfeeding
baby number three; he's 4 1/2 mos. and a recent bout of plugged ducts (always
same spot-about 11-1 o'clock) which did not respond (would unplug and then
return within 24 hr) to my usual recommendations-"breast in a bucket" soaks
(our private joke), phytolocca, positional breastfeeds, cabbage, the works so
I suggested breast surgeon whom she saw, got a Rx for ultrasound, had one
treatment and voila - she's unplugged.

She asked me to query the list and see if she should need ultrasound again,
not just once but more often within the next year or so (she's a long term
BFer) is this safe?
Has anyone had experiences with moms who have several repeats over time of
ultrasound? Any possible ill effects? Does ultrasound disrupt cells in
breast, as there is question of its effects on the fetus? (my question)

Dr Newman or anyone else who's used it for their clients or themselves? Your
responses are appreciated! Hopefully, this treatment will prevent recurrence
of plugs as mentioned in your handout, Jack. According to this mom, the
blocked duct and mastitis Newman handout was well received by surgeon,
chiropractor and PT (physical therapist) who had not used ultrasound on the
breast, so thanks for sharing!

Hoping to hear soon so can let this mom know.
