Susan,

My older daughter (4 1/2 years) is like this. If she receives a gift
of a doll that includes a bottle, she takes it to the trash (the
bottle, not the doll ;) ). When formula ads come on TV, she says,
"Ewwww, gross."

I'm not exactly encouraging this, and perhaps I am actually evil at
heart, but there's a large part of me that *rejoices* when she does
this. It's my opinion that kids should be taught that formula is an
*abberration* rather than that breastfeeding is great BUT unusual,
ykwim?

As a side note: my SIL only breastfed her daughter for about 4
months, then she "had" to go back to work. She had intended to pump
(and her workplace has nice pumping rooms, would give her time, etc.),
but never followed through. My daughter Rachel was staying with my
MIL while my MIL cared for this baby while the parents (my SIL & BIL)
went off for a week.

My MIL was mixing up formula, and my daughter asked, "Why is Glenn
getting that? Doesn't she get nursies?" And my MIL said, "No, her
mommy had to go back to work." To which Rachel said, "But she could
pump. Babies need mommy's milk. That stuff is bad for them."

I was proud of that too-- I think Rachel had a pretty good grasp of
the issues for a 4.5 y.o.!
